Kevin Kavanagh, MD, MS - Resume

Kevin T. Kavanagh, MD, MS  completed a residency in Otolaryngology (Ear Nose and Throat) in 1983 at the University of Iowa.   During this time he also received a masters degree and was awarded a State Recognition Award from the Iowa Lions Clubs for his work with speech and hearing.  

From 1983 to 1992, Dr Kavanagh was on the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Memphis and developed a federal program funded by Maternal and Child Health for Pediatric Indigent Care Clinics in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.     One of the outcomes of this grant was a yearly conference regarding the Health Care for the Poor and Uninsured.  This conference had an attendance from a seven state region with speakers from around the nation.  The papers from this conference were published yearly in a special issue of the “Journal of Health and Social Policy”.  Another product of the grant was the development of a computerized medical billing and tracking system which at one time was used by up to 40 practices in the region.  Dr Kavanagh has also served on a Federal Maternal and Child Health Grant Review Board and has given in-services on how to write federal grants; and has also consulted for NASA regarding medical databases.   He has published over 40 papers in peer review journals and has served as the Software Review and Computer Applications Editor for "The Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology. 

In 1992, Dr. Kavanagh entered private practice in Somerset, KY.   During this time he has been very active in Tobacco Education and Education of Patient’s and Physicians over the internet.  One of his projects was to have restaurants in Somerset, KY to go smoke free during the “Great American Smoke Out”.  This project had a 70% participation.   For his tobacco education activities he was awarded a State Recognition Reward by the American Cancer Society in 1977.  Since then, he has developed a tobacco education web-site at www.tobacco-facts.info and an extensive patient and physician medical website at www.entusa.com and developed, with the University of Kentucky, the first on-line CME course for Ear Nose and Throat Physicians at www.cme-usa.org   The course is developed in conjunction with the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Kavanagh has been an avid supporter of transparence at all levels of healthcare.   He founded Health Watch USA to promote transparency and consumer driven healthcare.  Health Watch USA disseminates information on transparency, certificate of need and consumer driven healthcare at www.healthwatchusa.org. 

Dr. Kavanagh is also an avid sailor and has developed an on-line sailing educational website ( www.sailingcourse.com ) with US SAILING, the USA’s national governing body of sailing.  He serves on US SAILING’s Training Committee and National Faculty.
